Concertina Razor wire
Concertina razor wire is a type of Razor wire commonly used at prisons and other high security establishments.
Depending on the coil diameter, each loop is clipped in 3 or 5 places to the following loop. So, when extended, the Razor wire forms a tubular effect by which the gaps are too small to allow someone to climb through. Please see below information regarding our various products.
Coil Diameter | No. of Loops | Standard Length | No. of Clips | Barbed Type | Notes |
450mm | 56 | 8-9m | 3 | BTO-10, 22,30 | Concertina Type |
500mm | 56 | 9-10m | 3 | BTO-10, 22,30 | Concertina Type |

Choosing your Razor wire
Typically, the bigger the diameter the more of an obstacle/deterrent the Razor wire is. 300mm and 450mm diameter is the smaller size we recommend for domestic installations. This size is an adequate deterrent and also the easiest to fit, as standard support brackets will be suitable for this diameter and weight of the razor wire. 730mm & 900mm diameter will require specially made brackets for an installation.
If fitting to the ground then we recommend a size that can’t be vaulted over, then the suggested options would be to install a single run of 900mm diameter Razor wire or alternatively, stack smaller diameter Razor wire on top of each other either vertically or in a pyramid fashion.
Points to note when selecting Razor Wire
0.5mm is the industry standard, anything less is likely to bend easily.
2.5mm is the industry standard, anything less has proportionately less tensile and inherent strength.
This determines the amount of Razor wire on the coil and therefore the profile density when deployed, an important point when comparing prices. All our coils have 55 loops per coil, this means the coils can be extended easily up to 10m whilst maintaining a dense profile of Razor wire.
The environment the product is being deployed in may determine whether Stainless Steel or Galvanised is the best option. Stainless Steel is more expensive, but offers greater durability especially in salt air environments. Over time Stainless Steel will outlast Galvanised, therefore making it the best long term option. However, Galvanised is more than adequate for most regions and applications. We would always suggest you check the level of zinc coating when selecting Razorwire, all our Galvanised products are 200g/m2, if the supplier cant provide the information, you may only be getting a product with 60g/m2 which will deteriorate and rust much more quickly.
Smaller blades such as BTO10 (10mm) are quite small and therefore less of a deterrent. Larger blade profiles such as CBT65 (65mm) are much more effective & therefore reflected in the price.
Use
Razor wire is used to top security fences. An individual attempting to get into or out of a secured area will have difficulties in getting through without adequate tools. On the other hand, barbed wire is usually used to restrain cattle and as inexpensive fencing.
Razor wire has been used by the military over the barbed wire in the recent past as the former is slightly lighter for the same effective coverage and occupies less space in storage. Compared to barbed wire, razor wire can be more injurious and hard to pass. Instances where cattle and people have toppled over barbed wire have been common. It is very difficult to get across razor wire without being seriously cut.
